This new edition supports cross-platform multiplayer, multiple control schemes, built-in recording, among others!

Mojang, the studio behind the global gaming phenomenon, recently announced a new version titled Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta, to coincide with the release of Microsoft’s new OS on July 29th.

The Windows 10 Edition shares most of it’s features with the mobile version Minecraft: Pocket Edition, along with a smattering of extras. Some of the highlights from their announcement post:

  • Craft, create, and explore online with up to seven friends playing Windows 10 Edition Beta, through local multiplayer or with your Xbox Live friends online.
  • Play online and local multiplayer with other Pocket Edition players thanks to a free update, due to arrive soon after launch.
  • Multiple control schemes! Switch between controller, touch, and keyboard controls with little to no effort!
  • Record and share gameplay highlights with built-in GameDVR.
  • Help shape the future of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta with our built player feedback mechanisms!
  • Chickens, zombies, pigs, boats, armed skeletons, potatoes, zombies, baby squids, enchantment tables, villagers, naked sheep, iron golems, potions, ghasts, pickaxes, carrots, and all the weird and wonderful goodness you’ve come to expect from Minecraft.

As it’s still in beta there are things left to be done, but Mojang are hoping the game will evolve and improve with player feedback, much like the original release of Minecraft back in 2011. Future patches to the game will be free.

Seems like a good deal to me! It’s cool to see how much this lil indie darling has grown since it’s inception. Looking forward to checking this out when Windows 10 drops in July.

Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta will be available for download through the Windows 10 store from July 29. Players who already have the PC version will obtain the Windows 10 edition for free, while newcomers can buy it at a discounted price of $10 throughout the beta phase.
